Thomson to compress it all up to 4K

August 26, 2014 06.10 Europe/London By Donald Koeleman

Thomson Video Networks (Hall 14.A10) will be demonstrating its 4K playout system powered by the ViBE VS7000 HEVC encoder and the Sapphire MPEG stream server.

This system has already been deployed by, for instance, Hispasat and Eutelsat for some of their 4K demo channels.

It provides ‘a rich UHDTV picture at up to 60 frames per second (FPS) in 10-bit colour’, along with watermarking based HEVC UHD content protection as mandated by the MovieLabs consortium.

The 7000 is the basis of all-encompassing video delivery infrastructure that mixes on-premises and cloud-based resources to support traditional live broadcasts over cable, DTH, and DTTV as well as IPTV and OTT on multiple devices.

Designed for traditional as well as new-media broadcasters and pay-TV operators, it provides encoding of both high-value content as well as high-density compression of long-tail content.

Delivering both premium and high-density multi-channel content in a single architecture combining cloud, virtual, and in-house resources.

Thomson will also demonstrate OTT delivery of improved HEVC video quality in live operation with MPEG-Dash and HbbTV.

Thomson Video Networks’ ViBE CP6000 contribution platform now offers ‘ground-to-cloud as well as ground-to-ground video delivery’, for up to eight SD/HD 4:2:2, 10 bit channels.

By integrating the Zixi stream protection algorithm to ensure the highest quality of service for broadcast-quality video transport over unmanaged networks including the open internet, Zixi provides a quality of service (QoS) layer designed for video delivery over unmanaged IP networks.

It copes with internet network impairments, packet loss, and jitter to offer broadcast-quality video delivery at an affordable cost.

Also on show will be the vendor’s DVB-T2 solutions for terrestrial networks.

The main driver behind increased channel capacity in by definition bandwidth constrained terrestrial broadcast networks is still MPEG-4 AVC, but at the show Thomson will also demonstrate HEVC or H.265 compression over DVB-T2.

Core of the platform consists of the ViBE EM4000 encoder for encoding of up to eight HD MPEG-4 AVC channels and the NetProcessor 9030/40, a highly integrated and powerful multiplexer and transport stream processor.

Thomson’s ViBE EM4000 was recently selected by Arqiva for the UK’s DTT network upgrade.

Three new ViBE EM4000 HD/SD encoder platforms, combined with the next-generation Flextream statistical multiplexer, now provide DVB-T/T2 video compression for the latest upgrade of the Arqiva DTT Platform, enabling the launch of a new HD multiplex.
