Launch nears for Roku TV

August 19, 2014 09.30 Europe/London By Julian Clover

TCL_RokuTV_Home_300DPI__14inTwo new integrated Roku TVs will make their debut in September

TCL and Hisense first revealed their plans at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January. Although not household names in Europe, TCL and Hisense are respectively the world’s third and fifth largest manufacturers.

Unlike earlier models produced by Sanyo and JVC, which bundled a version of the Roku streaming stick, the new models are fully integrated with the Roku platform.

A Roku home screen that unifies all content sources in one place, combining live programming and streaming – the concept may seem uninspiring to anyone that has a TiVo box, but for smart TV this is actually innovation.

The device can be controlled with the 20-button supplied remote or mobile devices using the Roku app for Apple iOS or Android. Roku TV supports modern casting standards including DIAL, which streams content from a mobile device to the TV.

Hisense Roku TVs will be available in 40-inch, 48-inch, 50-inch and 55-inch models from major national retailers beginning in late September.

TCL Roku TVs are available for pre-order from Amazon in 32-inch, 40-inch, 48-inch and 55-inch models.
