Virgin Media has announced the largest expansion of its network since the company launched in 2007.
The cablenet plans to build out to 100,000 additional homes in East London. Work to bring cable TV and broadband is already underway in Bethnal Green, the Isle of Dogs, Newham and West Ham. Homes in Stratford, Poplar, Stepney, Bow and East Ham will follow.
“Extending our network into East London means 100,000 more homes will benefit from the UK’s fastest most widely available broadband for the first time,” said Virgin Media chief executive Tom Mockridge. “This is a significant investment for Virgin Media and our largest, single network expansion project to date. We are very proud to be supercharging East London, helping thousands of people make the most of the UK’s exciting digital future.”
Virgin Media is currently available in around half of London homes. It also runs Wi-Fi on the London Underground – a service used by over one million Londoners on a daily basis.
Hackney residents are also benefitting from free public Wi-Fi provided by Virgin Media Business as part of a partnership with the Council. The free service has been available in Town Hall Square, Hoxton Square and Gillett Square since early 2014.
