Unitymedia Kabel BW adds Universal movies to VOD

July 29, 2014 09.36 Europe/London By Jörn Krieger

Unitymedia Kabel BWGermany’s second-largest cable operator Unitymedia Kabel BW has secured a movie package from US studio Universal for its video-on-demand (VOD) service.

Many current and future Universal productions will be available at the touch of a button following their cinema release at the same time as their DVD launch both in standard resolution and in high definition.

The line-up includes titles such as 47 Ronin, The Physician and The Wolf of Wall Street.

“Universal was the last of the major Hollywood studios missing from our movie selection,” said Christian Hindennach, senior vice president marketing & products at Unitymedia Kabel BW. Though the new deal, the number of titles available at the VOD service rises to more than 8,000.

With the move, Unitymedia Kabel BW also reacts to the growing interest in movies on demand. In the past business year, the number of fee-based videos accessed by its customers rose by 85%.
