Canal+ is preparing for the arrival of Netflix in France this September.
According to Le Figaro, it has effectively decided to take on its new opponent with a ‘sandwich’, consisting of on the one hand a premium and on the other a low cost offer.
It adds that Canal + effectively took the lead in mid-2011 by launching its own SVOD service.
Known as CanalPlay, it is now a market leader in France, with over 450,000 subscribers.
CanalPlay targets viewers aged 15-35, has an offer of 9,000 titles divided equally between series, movies and cartoons, all of which can watched unlimited for a fee of less than €10 a month.
Moreover, it can be unsubscribed to from one month to another and uses a system of basic recommendation, which makes it different to Netflix.
Canal+’s strategy, ahead of the arrival of Netflix, has also seen the launch of the MyCanal application in late 2013.
This allows viewers to watch channels on smartphones, tablets and PCs for no additional costs.
