Serbia is preparing a new draft law that would result in the reintroduction of receiver licence fees.
Quoting a source at the Ministry of Culture, Balkan Insight and BIRN report that the plan is fund the public broadcasters RTV and RTS through a compulsory monthly fee of RSD500 (€4.32).
It would come into effect in 2016, following the expiry of the current two-year budget funds for the broadcasters.
Until now, viewers have paid for the right to watch RTV and RTS through their electricity bills, with the utility company forwarding on their subscriptions to the broadcasters.
The move has been prompted by pressure from Brussels, which wants to see media independence preserved. Serbia is currently holding EU accession talks.
