The BBC is continuing its upgrade of the many versions of the BBC iPlayer. The latest to go live is a new version of the of CBBC iPlayer on computers, tablets and mobiles.
BBC business analyst Graham Matthews says the mission was to incorporate all of the new features introduced on the iPlayer whilst maintaining the safe environment that parents and children were used to.
The image-led curated experience includes brand new collections to showcase key programmes, seasons, events and themes. Restart has now been added to the simulcast streams, allowing users to rewind on the last two hours of the schedule.
For the first time Children’s iPlayer is also accessible using mobiles and tablets, key devices for this audience, as the website has been developed using responsive design.
“The Children’s iPlayer websites are built using the same components and technology as the main version of iPlayer. This approach means that new functionality can be easily shared between the two, improving and enriching the experience for all iPlayer users,” explained Matthews in a blog post.
Children’s content has been separated from the rest of the programmes in the iPlayer, so feature content deemed inappropriate for young children can be omitted.
Social networking elements present on the main iPlayer are also absent.
