RTL provides HbbTV overview

June 11, 2014 21.06 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul, Connected TV World Summit 2014, London

RTL Deutschland plans to make a number of improvements to its HbbTV offer this year.

Speaking in a presentation entitled Auf Rot geht’s los! (‘It all starts with red!’), Marco Hellberg, the company’s project manager strategic business development, said that in the NOW VOD-Shops service they included launching on further IDTV; the introduction of pay VOD (TVOD, SVOD) directly on TV; and the current business model – dynamic, pre, mid and post rolls with Videoplaza.

He added that NOW VOD-Shops had been available since 2012 and provided viewers with over 20,000 episodes.

Hellberg also said that other innovations in RTL’s HbbTV service this year have already included the launch of a Fitness and Yoga channel, exclusively on HbbTV and accessible via the Red Button, in April.

Hellberg in addition discussed a successful campaign about HbbTV, undertaken by public broadcasters (ARD, ZDF), private broadcasters (RTL, P77S1) and shopping channels (QVC, HSE24) earlier this year that had generated a significant growth of HbbTV visits. Its effects were still being felt now.

Commenting on RTL’s current HbbTV offer, Hellberg said it included the popular Digitext service. Launched in 2010, it was recently refreshed to make it closer to the original teletext.

RTL’s HbbTV offer in addition included Clipfish Universe and branded Red Button microsites, designed by advertisers.
