World Football Association FIFA has granted German public broadcasters ARD and ZDF the domestic broadcast rights for the Football World Cup 2022 in Germany.
The rights acquisition of which financial details have not been disclosed ensures that all major World Cup games will be shown on free-to-air television. This was agreed by FIFA and SportA, the sports rights agency of ARD and ZDF.
ARD and ZDF also hold the free-to-air TV rights for the Football World Cup 2014 and 2018. From this year’s tournament which will kick off on June 12 in Brazil the two broadcasters will show all 64 games live. Due to rights restrictions, the matches will, however, via satellite only be transmitted unencrypted on Astra (19.2° East), but not on Hot Bird (13° East).
