The DVB has given details of the proposals that will help set the standard for Ultra HD services in Europe. Veteran observer David Wood told ANGA COM delegates he was personally convinced that the format was going to be really successful and more successful that 3D.
A number of factors are under consideration as to which are the most important; these include contrast range, audio experience and colour fidelity.
Under plans currently before the DVB two phases linked to decoder availability have been proposed. Phase 1 has been agreed and case studies are being prepared. A second phase will be debated in meetings in June and September.
Wood said the Hollywood studios want a major jump to high-end, while the TV set makers, fearful of adding to the cost want a more measured approach.
There are also concerns within in the EBU that phase 1 might not offer sufficient difference for success.
