Magyar Telekom adds TV customers

May 8, 2014 08.01 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

Magyar Telecom SzekhazMagyar Telekom’s TV business continued to grow impressively in its home market in the first quarter, ending March with 897,541 subscribers, or 6% more than in the corresponding period last year.

The best performing sector was IPTV, where the 406,398-subscriber total represented a year-on-year increase of 20.7%.

The DTH subscriber total, meanwhile increased by a more modest 4% to 308,023 over the same period, whereas cable TV customers fell by 14.3% to 183,120.

Blended TV ARPU in Q1 amounted to HUF3,069 (€10), or 0.1% less than a year earlier.

Outside Hungary, the number of IPTV customers in Macedonia rose by 26.8% year-on-year in the first quarter to 90,464, while in Montenegro the total increased by 7.9% to 59,616.

The group as a whole had total revenues of HUF151,893 million in Q1 (-3% year-on-year).

Its operating profit was HUF16,094 million (13%) and EBITDA HUF40,528 million (3.8%).

Net income amounted to HUF4.8 billion, up from HUF1.7 billion a year earlier, thanks to higher EBITDA coupled with lower financial expenses.

In his comments on the company’s latest set of results, Christopher Matthiesen, CEO, noted that “in the fixed segment, we were delighted to see a continued increase in our share of the TV market, where almost a third of our residential customer base now subscribes to a triple play package.”
