Sport1 US takes NHL to Germany

May 6, 2014 08.53 Europe/London By Jörn Krieger

Sport1 USSport1 US, the German pay-TV channel for the fans of US sports, has secured the exclusive broadcast rights of North-American ice-hockey league National Hockey League (NHL) for the next two seasons for Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Each season, Sport1 US will transmit at least 60 games live with the original US commentary. “With NHL, we will have the fourth of the major North-American sports leagues in our line-up, along with NFL, NBA and MLB,” Sport1 CEO Olaf Schröder said in Munich.

“We’ve been eying the world’s best ice-hockey league for some time and we are excited that we’ll be able to offer the large local NHL fan base live transmissions from the North-American ice-hockey arenas from 2014/15,” added Schröder. “The focus of our interest will in particular be on the plenty of top players from Germany, Austria and Switzerland active in the USA and Canada.”

The NHL was founded in 1917 and comprises a total of 30 teams: 23 from the USA and 7 from Canada.
