Swisscom picks iWedia for IPTV set-top-box

April 22, 2014 15.30 Europe/London By Jörn Krieger

Swisscom TV 2.0
Switzerland’s national telco Swisscom has selected iWedia, a Swiss company specialised in integrated software solutions for television devices, to provide the software for its new Swisscom TV 2.0 Android IPTV set-top-box.

iWedia’s Teatro-3.5 software solution comprises the multicast and connectivity components necessary to support managed IPTV and OTT services with advanced Java user interfaces. For Swisscom TV 2.0, Teatro-3.5 was integrated with Verimatrix VCAS and Microsoft PlayReady which serve as the conditional access and digital rights management systems.

The Swisscom TV 2.0 box gives access to more than 250 TV channels of which over 80 are in HD quality, more than 6,400 on-demand videos in German, French and Italian language, over 5,000 live sport events per year and provides a 7-day catch-up TV service covering almost all channels.

A local time shift buffer allows pausing and resuming live TV. Thanks to the network PVR, subscribers can record as many programmes as they want at the same time. The recordings are stored in the cloud. The TV features are complemented by an app store offering more than 50 popular Android apps.

“Our vision of Android becoming a preeminent environment for digital TV devices the same way it happened for mobile devices is turning into reality,” said Nikola Teslic, CTO of iWedia. “There is an irresistible traction in the market as more and more digital TV device manufacturers as well as digital TV service providers adopt Android as their environment of choice mainly to benefit from its existing ecosystem.”
