Opera makes smart TV publishing easy

April 8, 2014 13.28 Europe/London By Robert Briel

epic-tv-app-made-from-opera-tv-snapMIPTV 2014 – CANNES. Opera has simplified the publishing process for getting content on smart TVs powered with the Opera TV Store.

“Normally the process for developing an app for smart TVs takes six to nine months,” explained Daniel Nordberg, head of content acquisition at Opera. “With Snap TV everyone can publish immediately and free of charge.”

During a demo in Cannes, Nordberg showed me the process and it is remarkably easy to create an app that will immediately go the Opera TV Store. With literally a few clicks a broadcaster or publisher of online video can make an app, decide territories and manufacturers where it can be shown and more.

The story on the latest version of Snap TV was the past few days one of the best read stories on the Broadband TV News website and it is easy to see why.

Opera offers the service for free, but when the app is in the store, the company will want a cut of the income,. be it advertising or payment.

At the moment, the store is available on Samsung and Sony smart TVs, TiVo boxes as well on the new Swisscom TV 2.0 set-top boxes.
