Amazon set top due next month

March 18, 2014 09.15 Europe/London By Julian Clover

AmazonIt has emerged that the Amazon-backed set top box will make its debut on the US retail market next month.

The Wall Street Journal reported that in addition to its own online store, Amazon will also push the device through stores including Best Buy and Staples.

No form factor has been confirmed, but it seems likely the device will take on the shape of a dongle rather than a fully fledged set top. This would put it on a par with Google’s Chromecast and the most recent Roku unit.

In addition to the capability of streaming its own online movies and series – In Europe Lovefilm Instant has now been rebranded through Amazon Prime – it is rumoured the device will also run PC-bases games.
