Mobistar selects Viaccess-Orca to secure cable TV

March 3, 2014 10.43 Europe/London By Robert Briel

Mobistar buildingMobistar has selected a content protection solution from Viaccess-Orca to support its planned cable TV service in Belgium.

Using Viaccess-Orca’s Prime Sentinel smart card-based conditional access system, Mobistar can securely deliver television content to subscribers’ set-top boxes.

Mobistar’s new cable TV service is expected to be launched around the fourth quarter of 2014, following new cable regulation in Belgium that gives alternative operators access to cable networks.

Leveraging the new regulation, Mobistar plans to expand its consumer mobile phone business into television and broadband services. The selection of the content protection solution partner is another step towards the launch of new convergent offers, after the implementation process was started via the payment of 1.2 million euros, mid-January, to initiate the cable regulation.

Mobistar, a subsidiary of France Telecom, plans to launch cable TV services on the networks of Telenet and Brutélé-Tecteo.

“The collaboration with Viaccess-Orca will enable us to offer Belgian consumers competitive cable TV services,” said Jean Marc Harion, CEO of Mobistar.

“Viaccess-Orca’s Prime Sentinel exceeds our requirements for content protection to guarantee the security of our television content and revenue streams.”

VO’s Prime Sentinel CAS provides security for a wide range of TV service models including live TV, catch-up, PVR, content sharing on home networks, and video-on-demand.

“Engaging end-users with premium content services means for content service providers to adopt flexible, reliable, and scalable security solutions,” said François Moreau de Saint Martin, CEO of Viaccess-Orca.

“Our Prime Sentinel smart card-based security solution, leveraging VO cloud for rights management and monitoring managed services, will be the security cornerstone for Mobistar’s upcoming TV service as it builds up a competitive multiple-play service offering. We’re honored by being chosen for this groundbreaking project.”
