BBC iPlayer achieved a record 315 million TV and radio requests in January, breaking the 300 million barrier for the first time.
On average, it had 10.2 million requests daily, which was the highest figure ever seen for the service.
The new series of Sherlock was exceptionally popular, with episode one generating over 3.6 million requests.
This made it the third most requested programme of all time on iPlayer.
Also popular on the TV were The Voice and new series of Outnumbered, while The Unbelievable Truth, Premier League Football, Australian Open and The Now Show drove radio figures.
Significantly, the number of requests via mobiles and tablets amounted to 127 million, or 40% of the total, which was another record.
