Sundance Channel launches short film competition

February 3, 2014 10.38 Europe/London By Robert Briel

Sundance shortsSundance Channel is launching a competition to enable filmmakers from Belgium to submit short films to be showcased on the network internationally.

The grand prize winner’s film will be screened at a private event at the third Sundance London film and music festival taking place April 25 – 27, at The O2 and on all of Sundance Channel’s international television and digital media services.

Filmmakers will be able to submit their short films at www.sundancechannel.be/scshorts through March 3. The films must be submitted by the producer or director who can provide proof of residency in Belgium. They should be no longer than 20 minutes and need to meet Sundance Channel’s technical requirements.

“Our first-ever short film competition highlights the spirit of Sundance Channel as a unique destination for independent cinema,” said Geraud Alazard, VP of marketing, AMC/Sundance Channel Global.

“We’re excited to support independent storytelling by using all of our TV and digital platforms for the first time to showcase breakthrough creativity by the emerging filmmaking community. We’re also thrilled to collaborate with Sundance Institute to showcase the grand prize winner at a private event at Sundance London.”

There will be two awards, including a Grand Jury Award and an Audience Award voted by independent film fans online. Entries will be judged for the Grand Jury Award on several criteria, including creativity, entertainment value, original storytelling and production value. The jury members will include representatives from Sundance Channel, Sundance Institute, Belgian film director Tom Van Avermaet and film journalists Stefaan Werbrouck and Lieven Trio.

The grand prize winner will win a trip for two to Sundance London to screen his or her film as a part of the activities hosted by Sundance Channel.

The competition is supported by Sundance Channel affiliates Telenet, Belgacom TV, VOO, Numericable and Snow from KPN.
