BT Sport now reaches at least 2.5 million customers, contributing to a 6% revenue growth in the broadcaster’s consumer business.
“We achieved some particularly strong audience figures in December and the exclusive rights to the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League that we have won will further strengthen the appeal of our proposition,” said chief executive Gavin Patterson.
BT has hinted that it may begin to charge customers for some matches following the £300m per season European rights deal.
The figures relate to what BT describes as “direct customers” – predominantly those receiving the freemium product as part of the BT Broadband package.
53,000 TV customers were added, more than double the prior year, taking the total to 956,000.
