TiVo is to concentrate on the release of new software-based products, having reduced the numbers of its hardware design team.
Wired reported Wednesday that five of DVR developer’s hardware team had been let go, with just two members retained. Going forward TiVo intends to use freelance designers to maintain its hardware.
Sources told the US tech title that TiVo is withdrawing from the hardware business, though TiVo itself said it was balancing staff levels apppropriately for the business.
TiVo’s latest product, a network digital video recorder, is currently under trial by Virgin Media.
The Roamio network system makes it possible for operators to decide whether the consumer can use share copies of shows or whether an individual recording is required.
