Virgin Media has hired Wolff Olins for a brand refresh, the first since the UK cablenet was acquired by Liberty Global.
The first action of the design agency has been to drop the Union Flag that has been incorporated into the company logo since 2011.
Robert Jones, Strategist at Wolff Olins and teacher at the University of East Anglia, is clearly not a fan of nationalist design. Writing in a September 2012 blogpost he said: “Don’t plaster on a union jack. It’s peculiar and slightly troubling that both Sky and Virgin Media are doing this at the moment. Why would a union jack make us feel better about their services?”.
The coloured background has also been dropped, creating a more minimalist design.
