Dutch incumbent KPN will be rolling out a network of ‘free’ WiFi spots using Fon routers.
KPN confirmed press reports that the operator would start to roll out the service in April. With the Fon routers, KPN customers will offer part of their broadband connection as a free WiFi hot spot. The spots are free to use for all Fon users, including all KPN customers who have activated their Fon router.
The operator is following Ziggo’s lead, who has activated over one million hot spots across its footprint. UPC has now also started to activate its WiFi modems for open access to other UPC customers.
The advantage for KPN customers is that its customers will also be able to access all Fon hot spots worldwide.
