The Dutch subscription VOD portal Ximon will terminate it services on January 29, the company said in a press statement.
According to the company, who confirmed earlier reports by Dutch broadcster NOS, Ximon did not attract enough subscribers to make a viable business. The portal offered a total of 4,300 movies and TV series, available both by subscription and as a PPV service. Monthly fee was €9.50. There were a total of 143,000 accounts (registered users, including an unknown number of paying subscribers).
Attempts to find a new round of financing or to cooperate with a strategic partner faltered. Ximon is now looking at a party, which can take over the VOD licences it owns. The two main parties active in the Dutch S-VOD market are Netflix and RTL XL/Videoland.
Following the announcement, the Ximon website no longer offers subscriptions and prepaid option, but viewers can still watch content on-demand on a transactional basis till January 28.
Ximon offered mainly Dutch productions and a choice of international art house titles. The portal is an initiative of the Dutch Institute for Sound and Vision (Beeld + Geluid), Dutch movie producers and the EYE Film Institute Netherlands.
The service was available on Philips, Sony, LG and Samsung smart TVs, PlayStation 3 and 4, Apple TV, Macs and PCs as well as on iPad and iPhones.
