Usage of the Dutch catch-up TV service NPO Uitzending Gemist has grown 10% during 2013 with a total of 314 million requests on the web, apps and connected TVs.
The increased usage was mainly due to the introduction of the new NPO app, which offers viewers both streaming live TV as well as catch-up on-demand programming. Usage on the app was up 25% during the year. NPO is the umbrella organisation of the Dutch public broadcasters.
The addition of live TV has significantly boosted the number of installations and usage of the Android and iOS apps. At the end of 2013 there were 1.4 million installed, up from 857,000 on January, 1, 2013. The number of active installations grew from 549,000 to 759,000.
The number of iOS installs grew to over 2 million, up from 1.6 million
Last September, the NPO app introduced live streaming of the three national Dutch pubic channels, Nederland 1, 2 and 3, as well as a number of thematic channels. A total of 33 million live streams were started.
The NPO app was developed by Hilversum based Stoneroos.
