Although the German Bundesliga has global ambitions it is still far behind the Premier League and therefore does not see it as a competitor, according to Jörg Daubitzer, MD DFL Sports Enterprises.
Speaking in a conference call following on from the extension of its partnership with Eurosport, announced earlier this week, he said that Premier League’s annual revenues currently total €3 billion, while the Bundesliga makes €2 billion, with TV accounting for most of the difference.
The Bundesliga currently makes €70 million each year in international revenues and its target is to raise the amount to between €100 million and €150 million after the 2014/15 season.
Daubitzer also said that the Bundesliga is seeking the right partners all over the world in order to grow its popularity.
Bundesliga does already have exposure – a recent game between Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich was broadcast live in 207 of 209 countries – and the deals with Eurosport and Fox mean that by 2015/16 nearly half (100) FIFA countries will show Bundesliga football.
