A+E’s History launches alien attack war game

December 5, 2013 10.26 Europe/London By Robert Briel

The Great Martian WarHistory, part of A+E Networks UK, is launching The Great Martian War 1913-17, a mobile game for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch that pits soldiers against an alien invasion, inspired by the premiere of the channel’s programme of the same name.

The Great Martian War game is a freemium app (releasing on other platforms in early 2014) and immerses players into the horrors of The Great Martian War in a re-imagined and unique perspective of the challenges faced by soldiers in The First World War.

With immersive 3D visuals and sound effects, the game starts in No Man’s Land of the Euro-Martian front and offers players virtually endless gameplay as they take on the aliens and attempt to defend the earth.

Running through vast battlefields, avoiding obstacles and collecting rations and upgrades along the way, players will be able to buy advanced features that allow them to progress further in the game.

Caroline Casey, director of digital media at A+E Networks UK, said: “The Great Martian War is a high-quality endless running game that takes players into an imagined war zone, with distinct parallels with the experiences faced by soldiers in The Great War. This game marks the expansion of History UK into the gaming world, as we develop broader and more innovative ways of engaging with a younger audience.”

The Great Martian War game was developed by Secret Location for History Canada, and is inspired by the special TV event of the same title. Co-commissioned by History Canada and History UK, The Great Martian War 1913-1917 fuses drama and documentary and will premiere on History in the UK on Sunday, December 8, 2013 at 8pm.

The Great Martian War 1913-17 App is available free from the App Store on iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.
