Wuaki.tv will launch in France, Germany and Italy next year, according to Simon Homent, the company’s UK content director.
It will then establish a presence in a further 10 European markets, among them Benelux, in 2015.
Homent also said that Wuaki.tv could look at UltraViolet next year.
Wuaki.tv is owned by Rakuten, which was founded in 1997 and is currently the biggest ecommerce company in Japan and the third in the world.
Rakuten’s expansion outside Japan has been based on ecommerce, finance and digital content.
Wuaki.tv, which is part of its digital content business, was launched in Spain, where it has its headquarters, and made its debut in the UK earlier this year.
In Spain, it already has over 900,000 users.
Homent said that although the service is available across all platforms, its main focus is TV.
Its strategy has been one of starting with a transactional rollout, and following up with subscription.
It chose the UK as its second market as most rights deals for the country could include European ‘add ons’.
