Telefónica does not see any conflict between the pay-TV and ‘play’ sides of its business, the latter of which includes a huge SVoD catalogue of movies and TV shows, along with optional cinema releases provided on a TVoD basis.
Speaking in a presentation entitled Pure OTT services from the point of view of pay-TV operators, Joaquin Lopez, product definition and strategy director – media services, Telefónica Digital, said that play should not be considered a threat to pay.
When asking the question of how can OTT help pay-TV be better, he added that this could be through curation, ‘flexilinear’ (making linear services more flexible) and multiscreen.
Lopez also said that pay-TV and telcos are “the perfect match”.
Commenting on Telefónica Digital Media Services, he said that its Global Video Platform (GVP), employing IPTV and OTT and being developed by Ericssson, has 3.3 million users.
It already offers several services, including Movistar TV, and will add more in the coming months.
