Familiar story at Canal Digital

October 31, 2013 11.06 Europe/London By Julian Clover

canal-digital-dish-installCanal Digital again managed to force up revenues through price increases as the subscriber base to the Telenor DTH platform continued to erode.

Revenues increased by 3% as subscriber numbers fell again to 931,000, a drop of 3,000 on the quarter and 14,000 year on year.

“In a market where competition is extremely high, we are working hard to stabilise Canal Digital’s customer base. Better products and an increased focus on customer service are some of the methods we are using. We are now seeing the results of these. In Sweden, we have managed to maintain our base at the same level as last year. In our biggest market, Norway, we now have a more or less stable customer base. At the same time, we are seeing an increase in revenues and profitability in Canal Digital”, said Patrik Hofbauer, CEO, Canal Digital.

Revenues and EBITDA within Telenor’s Satellite business were stable compared to the third quarter last year.

Telenor Broadcast increased its revenues by a total of 5.2% to NOK 1,68 billion.

Broadcasting revenues remained stable, whilst increased revenues from network and data services were offset by the effect of the retirement of the Thor II satellite in January 2013.

The launch of Thor 7 in the second half of 2014 is anticipated to bring eight times as much capacity to the One West network and data services in key areas including; North Sea, Baltic Sea and the Mediterranean.

Revenues in Conax increased by 20% and EBITDA by 23% due to higher smart card sales compared to the same quarter last year and sale of conditional access modules.
