The European DVB-T2 system has emerged as a candidate for the US next generation terrestrial platform. ATSC 3.0.
It follows the call by the ATSC (Advanced Television Systems Committee) for proposals for next generation TV broadcasting technologies in March. A total of 10 initial physical proposals were submitted, most of which are based on the VB-T2 second generation terrestrial standard.
“As technology continues to advance, the ATSC and its members are always looking to the horizon. Internet technology now permeates the consumer experience and mobility has become a requirement. With the next generation of television standards, we want to take advantage of advances in compression, transmission and other technologies that will keep millions of people informed and entertained through broadcasting’s inherently efficient one-to-many architecture,” said ATSC President Mark Richer.
With its most efficient use of spectrum and fast-growing global deployment, DVB-T2 is a strong contender to become the core element of ATSC 3.0.
ATSC 3.0 is expected to move to “candidate standard” status over the next two years. It was be designed to include higher capacity to deliver Ultra High-Definition TV services, robust reception on mobile devices and improved spectrum efficiency.
