An update to the BBC iPlayer desktop has removed Adobe AIR after updates to the technology resulted in the loss of downloaded shows.
In a blog post Dan Taylor, the head of BBC iPlayer, explained the new version does not require the installation of Adobe AIR and should no longer be responsible to Adobe’s updates.
Downloads in the Windows Media format have also been dropped as it was no longer “cost efficient”.
At the same time the BBC has simplified the application to focus it on the download of programmes, removing the Live TV and Live Radio areas that by their nature cannot be used offline.
A radio download update is expected for 2014.
