Japanese broadcaster NHK has confirmed that its broadcast-broadband service Hybridcast will officially launch on September 2.
The initial deployment, available to those with a compatible TV will offer viewers a mix of breaking news, weather, sports and financial information.
Pay-per-view and other on demand services will go live later in the autumn.
The use of tablet devices as a second screen, particularly as part of TV game shows, is also a part of the roadmap.
Initially Hybridcast is firmly in the connected TV market – the transmissions will only be included on terrestrial broadcasts – but use of other media is being considered.
Hybridcast takes advantage of the broadcast elements within HTML5.
