Strong start for BT Sport

July 25, 2013 08.13 Europe/London By Julian Clover

BT Centre in Newgate Street, LondonHalf a million households have signed up for the BT Sport channel as sales of the telco’s TV product continue to grow.

“It is early days but we are very pleased with the strong start in BT Sport. More than half a million households have now ordered BT Sport and that’s before the channels have even launched,” said outgoing chief executive Ian Livingston.

The majority of those to have signed up are existing BT customers.

BT added 197,000 retail fibre broadband customers, up around 30%, taking the base to 1.5m customers. The BT Sport channel is being offered as a ‘freemium’ to BT Broadband subscribers.

TV, the former BT Vision, grew by 23,000 to take the customer base to 833,000.

Consumerline losses of 130,000 were at their lowest level for five years and a 36% improvement on last year.
