Portugal’s Zon and Optimus have been awarded licences to provide universal telecom services.
Quoting a government announcement, local reports say that Zon will be able to offer landline services in the southern part of the mainland, along with the Azores and Madeira, while Optimus will cover northern and central Portugal.
Universal services have until now been provided by Portugal Telecom.
As it held a licence until 2025, the company is to receive compensation totaling €33.5 million.
