Al Jazeera is understood to be in advanced talks to buy Spain’s Mediapro.
Should it succeed, it would gain a powerful footing in the country and in particular control of the lucrative Spanish football TV rights held by the Barcelona-based company.
According to Economista, this would place it in direct competition with the financially troubled Prisa, which still holds the upper hand in terms of football TV rights ownership in Spain.
Mediapro already has a close relationship with Al Jazeera, with the former having signed several contracts with the broadcaster for the distribution of La Liga internationally.
