Dutch pubcasters launch streaming live TV

June 11, 2013 08.00 Europe/London By Robert Briel

NPOliveDTThe Dutch public broadcasters have launched a streaming live TV and radio service offering the full bouquet of channels over-the-top on multiple devices.

All three national TV channels as well as the full package of eight thematic channels are available on the new NPO.nl TV everywhere service. The brand new streaming live TV portal offer is based on html5 and is available on all browsers on PC and Macs. Later in the year, apps for all tablets and all smart phones and other mobile devices will be launched. However, live viewing is already possible on tablets on the website.

NPO.nl offers a full EPG, which also directs the viewers to catch-up programming in the broadcaster’s Uitzending Gemist on-demand service. Registered viewers can personalise their offer by clicking on favourites, saving catch-up TV programmes and share information by using social media such as Facebook and Twitter.

The new service is the most ambitious yet for the Dutch public broadcasters and combines all features for a complete over-the-top TV Everywhere service, which anyone can access on any device on any place. Based on html5, the service automatically recognises the device on which the programme is watched and optimizes the viewing experience.

Viewers can use the service as is, but have the possibility to personalise the experience to receive automatic recommendations. A unique feature is to save programmes in the cloud for later viewing.

The live streams offer the full programme output of all eleven channels with the exception of a few programmes for which the rights were not cleared with the content owners.
