Sky Deutschland is becoming profitable on a small scale, according to CEO Brian Sullivan at this year’s ANGA COM TV Summit.
“We are finally turning the corner, because we invest in the right content,” he said. “I don’t think we did that three or four years ago. Personally I wouldn’t subscribe to Sky at the time when I got here.”
Sullivan said Sky has a pretty forward straight forward pay tv model, getting good content to get the customers. This includes spending a lot of money on Bundesliga football.
“We added so much in terms of HD content, movies, series from HBO, and more, but the price remained the same, we now provide good value for money.”
Sky will continue to invest in content, “but there will also be more channels, because we believe channels are the carriers of brands in places where we feel we can differentiate.”
Dr. Andreas Bereczky, director of production at ZDF, said the thematic channel ZDFneo, aimed at a younger audience, was achieving its goals. “ZDFneo attracts a young audience and we need extra outlets to experiment and to reach other audiences at relatively low cost.”
The broadcasters’s on-demand service ZDF Mediathek is doing very well with between 40 and 50 million requests per month. “The Mediathek is a very important platform for us.”
