The BBC’s Natural History Unit is filming its next blockbuster wildlife series Survival in 4K Ultra HD.
The broadcaster’s Bristol-based Nature unit announced the news at a private screening of the first 4K footage shot for the series.
The BBC, along with Japanese public broadcaster NHK, are big proponents of the new Ultra HD (4K) standard.
At the moment, there are no regular 4K broadcasts, but the Japanese government said it will start as early as July 2014 with satellite transmissions in the new standard.
In Europe, satellite operators SES Astra and Eutelsat have both said they are launching 4K transmissions.
Eutelsat launched a dedicated demonstration Ultra HD channel for Europe on the Eutelsat 10A satellite on January 8.
SES Astra has said that it will launch its own demo channel in 2013.
Last December, Sky Deutschland has taped the first Bundesliga top match between FC Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund in 4K Ultra HD.
Television sets capable of showing 4K are available in the US and at selected stores in Europe with prices starting at EUR25,000.
