Ziggo to roll out home-based hot spots

January 24, 2013 11.57 Europe/London By Robert Briel

Ziggo App for iPadZiggo, Holland’s largest cable operator, is rolling out a network of home-based hot spots across its footprint during 2013/14 following a successful trial.

The operator is equipping all its broadband customers with a new Wi-Fi router, which will also act as a hot spot for all Ziggo customers. Ziggo first tested the set-up in the province of Groningen, which turned out to be so successful that it will now exchange all its wireless routers.

The total number of TV subscribers was 2,776,000 on December 31, 2012, compared with 2,920,000 on December 31, 2011. The total number of digital homes was 2,231,000, of which 917,000 take one or more additional pay-TV services. This compares with 2,152,000 digital homes the previous year and 940,000 pay TV subs.

The company also reported that its digital pay-TV revenue increased through an ARPU increase and a strong uptake of VOD, partly offset by a 27,000 decline in the total number of subscribers.”

Ziggo’s All-in-1 bundle subscribers number went up 134,000 or 10.6% for FY 2012, and internet subscribers were up 103,000 or 6.1% for FY 2012.

In the fourth quarter we have successfully stepped up our sales and marketing campaigns, which has resulted in a sequential increase of gross adds for the All-in-1 Bundle in Q4 2012,” said CEO Bernard Dijkhuizen, in a statement.

As the increase in sales is skewed towards the end of the quarter, we will record part of the Q4 sales in the first weeks of 2013. At the same time, we have seen an increase in churn to competition. However, the sequential increase in gross adds in Q4 more than offset the higher churn during the quarter.
