Digital TV Summit 2012 – LONDON. BSkyB regards OTT as an opportunity, with 2.8 million of its customers having used Sky Go in the last quarter.
In a wide-ranging presentation, Gareth Capon, the company’s product development director, said that Sky Go is a great example of delivering a lot of extra value and Sky continues to add more channels and services to it.
He cited the 700,000 viewers who watched the Ryder Cup in September, along with the 2.2 million who saw An Idiot Abroad and over one million Game of Thrones.
Capon also said that investing in Zeebox earlier this year has helped Sky to bring real innovation to Sky Go.
In addition, he cited what he termed “the other side of OTT”, namely the access the service gives to two sports (Formula One and football) in iPads.
In the former’s case Sky has created a live split screen view, which is an integrated OTT experience and something that couldn’t be done on TV. In the case of football, it’s been more about data than video.
The result has been truly innovative and there’s much more to come.
