New telecoms legislation has come into force in Belgium bringing it in line with its European counterparts.
Under the new law, introduced on October 1, subscribers to cable and IPTV services, mobile operators, ISPs and other telecom providers can cancel their subscription within two months, even when a long-term contract has been signed. The two-month cancellation period is applicable to everyone who has served the first six months of a new contract.
The cancellation message may be sent by the customer via regular mail, email or text message to a specially designed number of the operator.
Operators are also obliged to inform customers if their monthly bill reaches a certain – yet to be determined – amount, in order to prevent ‘bill shock’.
All major Belgian operators, including Telenet and Belgacom, have already adopted the new rules.
