French-based news channel Euronews is opening up a local news bureau in Athens to launch a dedicated 24/7 Greek language channel.
“This will be the first rolling news channel in the country,” said Euronews president Michael Peters during a press conference this morning, October 2. The bureau is to open in December and will employ 40 people, who will work on making a full Greek version of the news channel.
Next on the agenda is a fully dedicated Hungarian channel, which will launch in March 2013 with the opening of a bureau in Budapest, which will also employ 40 people. “This will be the 13th language edition of our channel,” said Peters.
Negotiations are also under way with Romania’s state broadcaster TVR to launch a local version in that country, “but this is still in the talking stage”
