Danish operator YouSee is to introduce an over-the-top element to its cable service.
The company is to deploy the Netgem N7700 hybrid set-top box and middleware. YouSee has launched YouBio, a subscription-based movie and TV service, available over the internet.
Netgem makes use of adaptive bitrate streaming to ensure viewers are able to receive a selection of OTT-delivered content in high quality from YouSee’s movies and TV-series content.
“The key consideration for us is to bring content to the big screen and be able to attract a broader mainstream audience to the Web-TV on demand services,” said Anders Blauenfeldt, executive vice president, innovation and IT, YouSee. “Netgem was able to meet these requirements and offers proven experience in deploying hybrid OTT services for a range of customers, so we are looking forward to the relationship in the coming years.”
The 7700 uses its hybrid connectivity to allow YouSee to offer services both on- and off-net. Customers link to the internet through Ethernet or dual band Wi-Fi.
“This new project highlights a key market trend. With over-the-top technologies, cable operators can today dramatically increase their addressable market and compete outside their traditional boundaries,” explained Christophe Aulnette, chief executive officer, Netgem.
The box will be demonstrated at next week’s IBC 2012 expo in Amsterdam.
