Ten per cent of the UK’s fixed lines – equivalent to over 2 million subscriptions – were already ‘superfast’, with download speeds of over 25 Mbps, as of the beginning of July.
According to research published by Point Topic, there are now 21.3 million fixed broadband lines in the country.
Although this figure rose by only a disappointing 175,000 in the second quarter, there were over 600,000 new superfast subscribers added in the same period.
Virgin Media was responsible for the majority of the latter, though BT posted a best-ever addition figure of 150,000 and other players such as Sky and TalkTalk also performed well.
Significantly, Point Topic also points put that DSL saw the tipping point in H1 2012, losing subscribers for what was the first time.
