Humax has become the largest shareholder in the residential gateway provider MMC Technology, reinforcing its position as a provider of home gateway servers.
The South Korean technology provider, which last week launched the first set-top for the UK’s YouView project, has taken an additional 8.8% in MMC that takes its overall holding to 21.98%.
“For more than 15 years, MMC Technology has accumulated and established technological expertise in the residential gateway market. This advanced know-how will become leverage for us to find a new market for our home gateway server, which is the next generation set-top box,” said Humax CEO, Dae-Gyu Byun.
Humax made its initial investment in MMC in 2001. It now plans to develop a next generation set-top box platform as well as expanding its position in the residential gateway market.
In addition to YouView, Humax has a sizeable DTT, satellite and cable set-top business including Freesat, Kabel Deutschland and Ziggo.
A residential gateway is a system that connects various devices to a home network and also links external access from service providers to support a variety of services, including voice, data, and video.
