Viaplay puts on Irdeto Active Cloak

July 5, 2012 12.44 Europe/London By Julian Clover

Modern Times Group’s Viaplay is to deploy Irdeto’s Active Cloak for Media software to protect content on its over-the-top service.

ActiveCloak for media will help extend the number of devices on which Viaplay is available, starting with the Apple iPad and iPhone.

“Irdeto continues to be a trusted partner to Viaplay, and our decision to deploy ActiveCloak to protect our brand and our ability to license the best content is just another example of how Irdeto’s technology aligns with our vision,” said Niclas Ekdahl, CEO of Viaplay. “In an OTT environment, assuring studios and rights holders that their assets are protected is essential for us to obtain the most exciting and latest content for our consumers. With ActiveCloak, we are able to securely deliver quality content to the most popular consumer devices to the satisfaction of the content owners while maintaining a compelling and intuitive environment for the consumer.”

With higher than average broadband penetration (over 92% in Sweden), Scandinavia is seen by Streaming Media as leading the way in OTT video. Working closely with Irdeto, smart TV and IPTV applications leader Accedo and hybrid OTT set-top box and middleware specialist Netgem, Viaplay has also now launched the first hybrid set-top box in Scandinavia to combine linear free-to-air broadcast and on-demand OTT content.
