In Brief: UPC Austria, BBC, News Corp, Pathe

June 28, 2012 08.36 Europe/London By Robert Briel

UPC Austria is adding six new HD channels to its line-up. Starting on June 29, RTL Crime HD, Romance TV HD, 3Sat HD, Kika HD, ZDFneo HD and Bayeriche Rundfunk HD are available to HD subscribers.

BBC World News is returning to the analogue bouquet of the UPC cable networks in the Dutch cities of Rotterdam and Amsterdam. BBC1 and BBC 2 remain available in analogue throughout the UPC footprint in the Netherlands.

News Corp-owned Wall Street Journal reported that the News Corp. board voted unanimously to approve a plan splitting the global media conglomerate into two separate publicly traded companies. One will operate as a newspaper and book publishing firm. The other will be an entertainment company that includes the worldwide TV interests and the 20th Century Fox movie studio.

Pathe Netherlands said it has introduced its Pathe Thuis VOD service for tablets on iPad, followed by apps for Samsung and Panasonic in September and the Microsoft Xbox 360 in November. Pathe Thuis will introduce a new revenue model in July, based on a cloud model. Currently, films can be rented on PCs and Macs and on Philips and other smart TVs.
