Nordic DTH operator Canal Digital is to allow subscribers to stop watching a recording in one room and pick it up in another.
The platform has extended its agreement with manufacturer ADB, using a new ‘white box’ in tandem with the existing HD PVR product. The two are connected together using Wi-Fi or Powerline technology. Canal Digital is one of the first operators in the world to implement ‘Follow Me’.
“If you’re a family you could be watching a football game or a movie, when someone else wants to view the big screen, so you just pass it to see it wherever you want from the moment you left off,” Patrick Hofbauer, CEO, Canal Digital told Broadband TV News. “We have said for many years that the customer ought to be able to have what they want, when they want, but it hasn’t yet been possible because of the technology, but nowadays with all the gadgets we have it creates new opportunities. The challenge is how we can get it together and make it simple for our customers.”
It is not yet possible to extend the follow to a mobile device, but Hofbauer said once Internet TV could be received on the set-top box, the next stage was to extend this outside the home. “If you can solve it outside the house you have probably solved it for the majority of customers. But if you want to use a 4G connection outside the house, then you want to be able to access it outside as well.
Follow Me is being rolled out across the region.
