Dutch cable operator UPC is now distributing all digital channels using QAM256, according to Digitalekabeltelevisie.nl.
The cabler started two years ago using QAM256 and has gradually switched all channels to the more efficient distribution standard. QAM256 allows an additional 12.6 Mbps to be distributed in every transport stream (50.6 Mbps instead of 38 Mbps).
Although the switchover is now completed, two channels remain in QAM64. These are the so-called homing channel, which steers the set-top box and the channel that is used for the distribution of local and regional TV stations.
The total capacity for digital TV distribution on the network is now 2 Gbps, of which 600 Mbps is still unused, according to a scan performed by Digitalekabeltelevisie.nl.
