DMOL is proposing major changes to the numbering system used by the terrestrial platform Freeview resulting from the need to create more space for new channels.
The organization formed by the holders of the six digital terrestrial multiplex licences, the BBC, ITV plc, Digital 3and4 and Arqiva is proposing an expanded general entertainment section, a move it says is needed because of the growing number of day-part channels that could result in 100 LCNs (Logical Channel Number) required in the next two to four years.
It is the second phase of DMOL’s consultation originally launched in January 2011.
HD, Children’s, News and Adult genres would adopt a higher position with HD channels being reordered to match their SD equivalents. BBC One HD at 101, BBC Two HD at 102 and so on.
Out go previous proposals for local television to have its own area within the guide, instead DMOL is keeping with viewer preferences for genre-based groupings, which would see the majority of local channels listed within General Entertainment.
400 to 499 is being reserved for IP delivered services, though these would not be allocated by DMOL itself.
A consultation will now run until May 24, 2012
